Västmanlands Teater - "King Lear"

The aging King Lear wishes to retire and decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters. However, the gift comes with a condition: each daughter must convince him of her love for him. The one who loves him the most will be rewarded most richly. But in a world where power struggles and betrayal are part of everyday life, Lear’s naivety and arrogance make him an easy target for his power-hungry children.

William Shakespeare’s King Lear has captivated audiences for more than four hundred years – and in many ways, it is as relevant today as ever. The play’s intricate interplay of family relationships, love, and greed leads to a dramatic reckoning in which the very nature of humanity is laid bare.

In a musical blend of tradition and innovation, director Alexander Öberg offers a new interpretation of King Lear and explores one of humanity’s most fundamental dilemmas: How does one know if one is truly loved?
