Bengt-Göran Broström - "Mimerporten"

The artist Bengt-Göran Broström (1947–2004) was a Swedish painter and sculptor, educated at Konstfack and the Valand Academy of Fine Arts, and active in Västerås. In his visual world, working life and urban environments linked to the ASEA area recur – with Mimerporten serving as an important motif and memorial in the city’s history.

Background & style

  • Broström often depicts ordinary people in everyday life and work, with a direct and down-to-earth tone. He worked in both painting and sculpture, and frequently returned to wood as a sculptural material.

Working methods & motifs

  • In his works, figurative storytelling meets a strong sense of place. The rhythm of the city – cyclists, flows of movement, and gateways – are recurring motifs. A documented example is his painting depicting Mimerporten.

The work "Mimerporten"

  • Mimerporten was the main entrance to ASEA’s industrial area and was strongly associated with the so-called Asea flow: the dense streams of workers passing by at different shifts of the day, often by bicycle. This environment forms the backdrop to several of Broström’s visual worlds.

In urban space & collections

  • Broström is prominently represented in Västerås’s public spaces, including Asea-strömmen in Stora torget, as well as works such as Vänortsbrunnen and Mälarvass. Together, these works show the range from narrative urban scenes to sculpturally strong, formally focused pieces.
