Nathalia Edenmont - "Flower"

Nathalia Edenmont (born 1970 in Yalta, Ukraine) is a Swedish-Ukrainian photographer and artist based in Stockholm since 1991. She is an expressive and conceptually driven photographer who creates visually powerful and symbolically charged images. By combining serene portraits with dramatic material compositions, she produces artworks that are both poetic and provocative — thematically exploring life, death, beauty, and the female experience in a deeply personal way.

Background & Education

  • She studied art, music, and ballet at an art school in Yalta, continued her studies in Kiev and Simferopol, and later pursued graphic design at Forsbergs in Stockholm, where a mentor encouraged her to express her inner visions directly through photography.

Style, Themes & Technique

  • Edenmont’s artistry is characterized by staged photographs in which models wear garments made of materials such as fruit, flowers, vegetables, beetles, or butterfly wings, often set against dark backgrounds. Her images balance between allure and repulsion, addressing themes such as birth, death, womanhood, beauty, decay, and Western double standards.
  • She often uses butterfly wings in fragmented collages and describes her photographs as photographic paintings. Edenmont draws visual inspiration from the iconography of art history and from popular culture, creating large-scale, dramatically composed images infused with elements of vanitas symbolism.

Exhibitions & Recent Works

  • She recently presented her exhibition Out of Body at Nancy Hoffman Gallery (spring 2025), where she exhibited 15 photographs and 7 sculptures in Carrara marble (eggs and lilies) — her first sculptural works.

Recognitions

  • Edenmont has exhibited in Sweden, the United States, Germany, and Russia, and her works are included in collections such as Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Miami Art Museum, and the Moscow House of Photography.
  • She has received the Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s working grant on two occasions.
